To
dearest Daisy on his birthday
_________
Tis spring! the sun with renovating ray,
Leaves his dark chambers and th’ approaching day,
Beams in bright garb of many colored light,
Dispersing wide the lingering mists of night;
The joyful flocks on verdant pasture graze,
The feathered songster’s warble notes of praise,
Whilst Heaven assumes her beauteous azure vest,
And nature smiles to see her works so blest.
But why doth Sol with brighter beam appear,
This day all nature with his light to cheer?
Why seem the flocks through pleasant meads to stray,
With hearts more joyous, and with course more gay?
Why doth the lark this slumbering morn awake,
With loftier soarings, & more brilliant shake?
Why seems bright heaven with her look serene,
To shine more sweetly on the glowing scene?
Tis Daisy’s birth, and need I ask again,
Why beauty seems more bright on nature’s reign,
When hearts are gladder still than sky, or plain.
