To dearest Papa

On his Birthday

O, t’is the twenty eighth of May,

Your happy Birthday!

Even the birds do rejoice,

With their melodious voice.

How happy and grateful I ought to be

To you dear Papa who I’m sure loves me

Almost as much as I do thee.

To Papa and Mama we owe all we have,

For from dangers and miseries they did us save;

But we’ll never be able to do what we ought,

No, no, though our days be longer or short,

And I always shall love dear Papa,

Till we live to reside in a heavenly star.

Your affectionate

Sam
