9th May 1806–

Dear Sister,

By the packet I rec[eiv]ed your distressing letter of the 5th March—on the otherside is copy of my last which fully answers yours[.] I will only add a little; Your son Martin requires every exertion of his friends to keep his properties from being torn to pieces, I have, & still will do all in my power for him and I can say I am in no doubt I shall be able to accomplish my wishes, but my Sister, you must lend your assistance also it will make it easier to me, if I was not in great credit, the Estates certainly wou’d go to hell as I do not think any other wou’d do & what I have & am continuing to do advancing my own money to keep the hungry shirks [sic] quiet– It gives me the most exquisite pleasure when ever I have been of service—if you possibly can, do not draw any emolument from the Wharf, shall I speak plain, it will not be just, it owes a large sum to Martin and he cannot afford to give a Shilling away– I refer you for fuller information to the latter part of my letter to P. B. & Co by this packet– As I have a number of letter to write, I will now conclude wishing you and the whole family well & happy[.]
