To
dearest Septimus
on
his birthday
_________
The reveillè of Spring from afar hath been sounded,
Her banner aloft in the sky hath appeared,
From above and below that glad note hath rebounded,
Hills, valleys & woods her approach have declared.
From hill, vale & woodland what myriads awake
From cold cheerless beds her glad call to obey,
Leaves and flowers their slumbers now soon shall forsake
To ’don her bright liv’ries & join her array–
The rose which now lies in its emerald shrine
Eer long shall expand in her sunshine serene,
It’s [sic] fragrance & colours now soon shall combine,
To glad ev’ry heart and illumine the scene.
Then O dearest Sep may fresh years, to our sight
Fresh virtues unnumbered disclose,
Which still may infuse our fond hearts with delight,
And thy breast with the calm of repose–
And may that great pow’r whose munificence birth
To all nature rich beauties hath given,
Support by his strength ev’ry action on earth
And direct all thy steps towards heaven.
