Thursday [9 October 1828]
My dear James
I am now 4 o’clock in the Morning writing to you from the Plough, where I shall remain untill between 6 & 7—before I go to Montpelier Terrace– God support us– Your Letter was dated Monday but I got it only yesterday, Wednesday, a little before 12 & was off before 2– I would wish our dear one’s remains should rest with the Child she lost & who was buried in Ledbury Church– Mr Watts must be applied to, I hope he wont refuse, as it would grieve me much, but he is odd & unfortunately I have been opposed to him, so that I know not what to expect, yet I think he hardly would, I must depend upon you doing what you can– Send Mathews back by the Mail– I must see him this afternoon–
How are my poor dear bereaved Children– Let me see you as soon as possible– I cannot tell you what I have felt, to be deprived of one associated with every thing that was in the way of rational life & enjoyment for so many years is bad enough to bear, but to lose the Wife of your bosom the Mother of your Children, when yet I had a right to calculate upon many remaining years for us, is very grievious—but let me not repine, God has seen fit to remove her from the tenement which her Soul inhabited into the dwelling of his Son– Her lot I am assured is a gracious one, for I believe her to have had the true saving faith, which cometh from God alone. I write in haste &c with a head ache
God bless you my dear James, beloved to me, if for no other reason than that you were loved by her who was once your Sister & my Wife
