My dearest Sam
You will be surprised to hear & I trust pleased, that when this reaches you, my beloved Bro will be at no very great distance from Jamaica– He sails, I believe on Saturday, on board the David Lyon, Selby, who intending to stop at Madeira will enable this to be with you perhaps a fortnight before his arrival– I have thought much upon it & chiefly through your earnest desire have at length been led to a step that I trust will turn out of advantage to us all– Our beloved Ba upon the color I put upon the project, namely as being profitable to Bro’s interest, has consented in a spirit that has if possible raised her still higher in my estimation. I need not ask you to take care of him, under Providence; when you know him you will I doubt not, love him as much as all do, who know him– I fear that he will be too willing to expose himself & exert himself overmuch, but you will be a kind guardian & adviser & restrain him from all excesses. He is sound in principle & every way trust-worthy & I hope will be useful to you. He carries the Power of Attorney, which I believe has been drawn up so as to give you all the power & authority that I myself could exercise were I in the Island. I called yesterday upon your Solicitor Forster to enquire if he had any thing or message to send; he said he had not & that he had not heard from you for a very long time– He says that our present position, as regards the Suit, is unquestionably one of a defensive character & that he had strictly charged our friend Gordon to be very careful in his conference with R. Barrett, how he conducted himself & what he said as displaying too great an anxiety, thus manifesting weakness– How it will all end, God only knows, & will best judge, truly we have been severely handled, but it is all for the best & I trust that the day is not far distant when a turn may take place in our behalf– Remember we claim Interest on the money advanced by my Grandfather for my uncle George’s Property– Bro will tell you all the news and may the Lord bless and keep you my beloved Sam
