SD791.05. Reuben Browning & John Kemp Devonshire to Nathan Mayer Rothschild
Addendum to The Brownings’ Correspondence, vol. 3.

Sir
We have been actively engaged since our arrival here in making enquires at the different Administrations and have ascertained one [1] important fact, namely that Coupons stamped with the Words “Pay S. B Sichel” have been paid to various people in Amsterdam, which circumstance unequivocally proves to our minds that these Coupons have been taken in this place: further proof it is quite impossible to obtain, because it is a principle with the Administrations never to refuse payment of Coupons payable to bearer, although they may be stamped as belonging to a particular party.
We feel assured that your discernment will cause you to coincide with our opinion– It is but justice to inform you that Mr Sichel has rendered us every assistance in his power and is as anxious as ourselves to bring this matter to light, and it is satisfactory to us to assure you that by the new arrangements adopted, we are convinced that the smallest error in any future accounts will be immediately discovered.
We consider the object of our journey here is successfully accomplished as far as removing the onus of this affair from our own shoulders, inasmuch as the Coupons supposed to have been stolen actually bear the Stamp “S.BS” and we regret that we find it impossible to trace to whom they have been paid–
We shall proceed back by way of Brussels, as you desired, in the hope of ascertaining something relative to the Belgian Coupons, and bearing in mind to be in London in time for the Dividend due on the 1st Novr–
We beg to assure you of our constant diligence in our enquiries relative to the Business on hand and remain,
Sir
very respectfully
Your obt faithful Servts
R Browning
