On my quitting England some years back I entrusted Messrs Frere & Forster with the arrangement of all such accounts as were standing against me at that time. The letter you have forwarded to me from Mr Jno Close, I cannot clearly understand, for neither of Mr Close himself, nor of the several transactions to which he alludes have I the slightest recollection. I cannot therefore in the absence of all vouchers, & ignorant of the statement which he makes, consent to discharge a claim which is now for the first time made upon me, after nine years & upwards having expired.

If therefore it is to this demand that you allude, when you express yourself anxious to affect an amicable arrangement, I cannot, I regret accede to your arrangement[.]
