My dear Badley
Have the kindness, without loss of time, which wd be the loss of a Court, & most likely of the Land, to see if the quit rents have been paid up on the run referred to in the inclosed letter– It is apparently two hundred acres, adjoining my Property in this parish– I understand no quit rents have been paid for about 30 years– If the land can be taken up under the Act please to send me the Bond for signature without losing a post—you can pay the quit rents arrears out of the Bill. I am very desirous of going thro’ the forms to be ready for next court– The land may attract the attention of some of them who have grounds thereon, if I am not sharp– The runs I lately paid up quit rents on, were as to 3 of them claimed & mostly sold before I came back to this quarter—so you see that delays are dangerous[.] Sand having made some of the searches to find out the Land, I intend him to go thro’ the Court with it, pray have the kindness to send him the papers, when they are ready to apply for the Attorney’s Genl ’s fiat– I sincerely hope my friend George Smith will obtain the office of Recr Genl[.] There is no man in Jamaica so popular– It is endurable to pay well an officer one knows & esteems but to contribute to the splendour of some noble sprig—“who cares as little for us as we do for him[”] it is quite a torment to think of it[.]
