You very well know, Dear Miss Haworth, that I am your true friend in will, and deed too, so far as my poor power goes. Where it does not go, nor ever can, is it not best to be silent and undisappointing? But how can men, any men, much help women?

I rather think I know Mr Babbage—that is, have met him some dozen times or more in society—and should like to do as you so kindly propose—but to-morrow night I am engaged, indeed. Some other time, thank you!

My sister will return to-day– She & my mother will be truly glad to see you any morning—only, let me know the day before if you can,—for I should be vexed at missing you.
