I never had the Pre-Raffaelite pamphlet of Ruskin—which I suppose you enquire for—only Eastlake’s Book, [2] which I return with many thanks. I hope there has been no mistake, & that you are no loser by your generous lending.

1. Approximate dating based on the stationery, which is similar to that used in letter 3022; the more familiar closing here indicates a later date than that letter. The Mackenzies left Paris in June 1852.

2. Either Materials for a History of Oil Painting (1847) or Contributions to the Literature of the Fine Arts (1848), both by Charles Lock Eastlake. The John Ruskin pamphlet refers to Pre-Raphaelitism, published by Smith, Elder & Co. in 1851.
