1. Dated by RB’s reference to letter 5626 from Alexander Macmillan, received “two days ago.”

2. The general Parliament elections of 1865, which took place from 11 to 24 July, returned a large Liberal majority, ensuring that Palmerston remained prime minister. RB’s election district, Marylebone, re-elected Liberal candidate John Harvey Lewis (1814–88). We have been unable to determine Chapman’s election district for this period.
