[Venice—Tuesday, ca. 15 May 1890]
Apropós of Life of Browning, by Wm Sharp, & his account of death of Mrs. B. we daily met Dr Wilson, her physican durg a fortnight at Florence, April, 1890. He said, ‘to the very last, Mr B. would not hear or believe that her life was in danger.[’] I said to myself, ‘I must tell him’—& did. He sd, oh no—she has often been thus. Finally B. came out & sd ‘she has fainted Dr but she often faints.[’] I went, she was dead. An abscess burst in lungs and asphyxiated her. So much for accuracy of Mr Sharp’s account.
