[Venice—Wednesday, 14 December 1891]

Dined here Mr & Mrs R. B. Browning. R.B.B. showed H. F. Brown & us letter from Municipio of Venice about the stone & inscription to be placed on Palo Rezzonico to memory of R.B. and asked our opinions as to how many lines of his verse shd. be given. We got down & read them, and all agreed that in such case brevity was best, and that the two lines ‘Open my heart &c.[’] would be sufficient. RBB sd there was no place on façade, wherefore it shd be placed on the side, but visibly to passersby.
