Saturday. Oct 15th.

They did not come. Provoking! Now I shall not be able to go to Malvern on Monday. I had made up my mind to write, & had even sealed my letter to Mrs. Boyd, praying her to remember that by not coming or writing, she was keeping me at home. But Henrietta wished to send Billy to the Bartons instead of to the post: & besides she complained of my always taking the poney away on Monday—& besides—I thought it best not to send my letter. Mrs. Boyd may write herself to me tomorrow.

By the way of distracting Georgie & myself from Homer, I let out my squirrel. He leapt up into the air, & climbed my bookcase, & performed so many tight rope maneuvres, that I was inclined to wish him to be tight again. Particularly in the evening, when Atalanta herself seemed to have no chance of catching him. Arabel & Bummy & Ann & I, were about an hour at it. At last, he wisely ran into his cage, when he cd. run no where else; & thus he was caught, as the anti-reformers will be. Mr. Deane & a goose for dinner. No identity hinted at!—[1] He is a good natured man, & not without sense; & he has lent me the London Encyclopœdia.[2] I played on the guitar; but my voice had gone away with my breath, in the squirrel chase. He & Bro & H sang—or tried at it.

1. The Rev. Thomas Dean curate of St. James’s Church, Colwall and his wife, Mary.

2. The London Encyclopœdia, or Universal Dictionary of Science, Art, Literature, and Practical Mechanics [ed. Thomas Curtis], 22 vols. (London, 1829).
