Saturday Oct 29.

Finished the 5th. chapter De legibus—but very unwell all day. Wrote to Mrs. Boyd,—& told her what I thought wd. have been the consequence, had she gone to “that desirable Cheltenham”—namely that by this time she wd. have deeply lamented it. I hope the consequence of my saying so, may not be a repetition of Annie’s vote of censure!—[1] H & Daisy rode to Marcle[2] with the Martins. How very unwell I have been today!-- Told the stories of Sindbad the sailor & Baron Munchhausen,[3] to the children this evening.

1. For E.B.B.’s interference in H.S.B.’s plans, see BC, 2, 299–301.

2. Little Marcle was a village about 5 miles S.W. of Hope End; Much Marcle about 7 miles S.W. It is likely that they rode to the latter, as this was where the Martins’ friends, the Moneys, lived.

3. [Rudolph Erich Raspe], Baron Munchausen’s Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia (Oxford, 1786).
