Monday. Nov 1st. [sic, for 31 October.][1]

The first of November!— How & where will this month end to us? Shall we have moral joys as well as physical ones? Now I wd. not be a prophet, & be able to answer my own questions for the world.

Tho’ I said “no letter”, yesterday, there was a letter from Mrs. Boyd to me. She speaks of St Lennard’s,[2] & of the advantage of our going there & her settling close to us! Well! that wd. make me very happy indeed!— I see how inclined she is to draw me again into a Malvern controversy—, but it wont do—I had enough of it last spring!— Henrietta went out to drive with Mrs. Martin: & all the boys ran with the hounds!—

Finished the 9th. chapter De legibus. Plato’s circles have made me giddy!— I cant make them out; but I must try at them again. I wish he were not quite so meta-meta-metaphysical!——

1. This and the next eight entries were correspondingly misdated before E.B.B. apparently became aware of the mistake.

2. Sic, for St. Leonard’s, a resort near Hastings on the S.E. coast.
