Thursday Novr. 17.

Reading Camoens last night, suggested what I have been writing this morning—“Catarina to Camoens”.[1] I do not dislike it. A letter from Papa, speaking of his return!—

Henrietta returned, & delighted with her visit. But she always is delighted with anything like a visit—except where the Boyds are either active or passive. She brought—what delighted me in no degree—an invitation from the Biddulphs to Bummy & me for next Tuesday, to dine & sleep there. Botherissimè—I dare say Bummy will go.

1. See Diary, p. 316, for the earliest known version of this poem. After extensive revision and expansion, the poem was printed in Graham’s Magazine, October 1843, pp. 208–209. With further changes it was included in E.B.B.’s 1844 edition of Poems, II, 229–236.
