[Manchester—Friday, 15 September 1865]

Sepr 15. Weather still excessively warm and dry. Returned to town.

Old Mr Dana called on J. He looks very pale and old—and could not find the heart to respond when we spoke of Manchester. Father Hecker also called. He glories over the spreading of the great Catholic church and by all the acts of which flattery & Jesuitism are possessed, he attempts to obtain a footing with him. In 20 years he said, the church will be the only power in America—she is republican, the protestant church is not so.

Mr Sumner speech at Worcester is moving the hearts of all patriots to rejoice, we need such words, ah! how much. We stand upon a perilous edge, the battle for Freedom is not yet complete.
