[Boston—Saturday, 16 September 1865]

Saturday Sepr 16. Henry James came to see Jamie. He has not reviewed Montalembert’s pamphlet as he said he would do being a friend,—does not like it well enough to say anything about it. Was disappointed because we disliked his son’s story. The young man will re-write the conclusion.

Mr Wasson & his wife came in. What painful contrasts one sees between the popular clergyman and his wife. J. says the latter looks as if she might be the wife of the Apothecary in Hamlet, thin and pale & poor with cotton gloves, far too long in the fingers. He patent leather boots etc.

Dr Putnam came in to inquire if we had a good summer, was charmed with the new establishment; he said, well I suppose you anticipate a good many pleasant days to come in this place. “No said J. manfully, I don’t Dr. I don’t look forward to anything.” That’s right, that’s right, sufficient unto the day is the good thereof.

I could not help thinking that was Dr Putnam’s motto through & through.
