[Boston—Wednesday, 28 March 1866]

Wednesday. Lillian Aldrich needing a little consolation & petting. Mary Dodge full of life and new book and good work—wishes to put one of her nieces at a private boarding school and pay expenses. As the earth worms after a rain all come up out of the ground so these early spring days bring all our country friends to town—Mrs Hawthorne came and Mr James also to see J.T.F. We passed last evening with the latter.

Jamie carried Mr Howells to Longfellow’s. He said it was the most instructive evening he had ever past [sic]—they talked much of metres. J. says it is odd to see what a lack of rhythmic ear Mr Norton shows yet his suggestions are most wise.
