[Manchester—Monday, 5 August 1867]

August 5th Monday J. went to town after two lovely days here. The day was warm but clear & we drove to Gloucester & Eastern Point in the afternoon. The sunset was one of those rare and exquisite scenes we can but rarely see, the sky pale green with rosy clouds, the sea untempered steel, the ships just blushing with color and spreading their full sails. We enjoyed our drive deeply through the old fishing town of Gloucester to home in the after glow of evening.

We found Mr Bartol awaiting us.

Jamie brought me Lissie Greene’s picture of the owl & books as a gift—!!!!
