[Manchester—Tuesday, 6 August 1867]

August 6th The fog bell rang in the still mist this morning. J. went to town. Mr Bartol walked to Gloucester while I enjoyed the beach and accomplished little. Am reading Bacon’s Advancement of Learning which if I could thereby advance my capital in proportion to the advancement of my faith I should do well. But I am lost in regret sometimes when I contemplate my ignorance and inexecutiveness.

Lissie & Mrs Bartol came tonight. They were rapturous in their delight at being free from Marblehead.
