[Boston—Thursday, 8 October 1868]

Thursday. Oct 7 [sic]. A week gone. Where?

I am occupied with visits and housekeeping, chiefly, thus far. We have had two exquisite drives to see the foliage, otherwise we have been quietly enough here. Mr. & Mrs Stephen are with us more or less and will stay here now until they go. But the lovely autumn slips away, the colors fade, the days go by. We enjoy much but I mean to enjoy yet more by learning to read and enjoy my study as well as feel the pressure of life and people. It is the only salvation for our hearts and brains to do this.
