[Boston—Saturday, 19 December 1868]

Saty Dec. 19. What a week! Fair going, giving, struggling through dust and wind. Jamie’s great success at the Thursday Club with his paper about Dickens, a party, one or two rapid but heart-cheering encounters with friends, all too short—and the days have gone.

Happily I hear that yesterday was the shortest day of the year which may account for something.

Carleton has returned from his journey round the world. He gives J. great delight with his stories of travel especially with his predictions of our proximity to the East about to be established by the Pacific Railroad.
