[Boston—Monday 27 July 1868]

Monday July 27. Drove into the country yesterday after church, finishing C.B.’s life, & a visit from Howells.

J. amused me at night by telling me of the first knife he ever owned. He named it “Sharper” and the way in which Sharper went about among the boys the reputation of it at once becoming enormous, was funny to hear of.
