[Boston—Sunday, 8 October 1871]

Sunday Bret Harte came, or I should say Saturday to pass Sunday with us. The day was perfect, the foliage exquisite beyond description, as indeed it has been everywhere this year. We walked and talked a long time together. His keen perception of fun, his reverence and the clearness of his intellect make him very attractive but especially his sweet sensitive nature. We like him very very much. He talked around the fire on Saturday of his California experiences—of his ride with the murderer and “other tales.”
