[Manchester—Sunday, 13 August 1871]

Sunday 13 August. Breezy autumnal day—crickets on the wing. Golden-rod in bloom everywhere. Passed the P.M. with dear J. on breezy promontories in the Great Pasture, choosing the spot we should most desire if we might choose our habitation there.

Mrs Skinner sent us some oriental gifts, in an oriental fashion. Also a small brochure on France by Jules Patenotre which is spirited and true it appears to me in its view.
