[Manchester—Monday, 14 August 1871]

Monday. Rain approaches—a soft clouded dawn. Walked a little in the morning but being overcome with weakness and languor was obliged to remain perfectly quiet the rest of the day. Read in my room. Dear Jamie sat with me in the evening while we enjoyed an hour or two together. He is the most tender and watchful of all lovers.
