Monday. Dear Jamie went to town and again I gave up the livelong day to play with the children. They would be so lost in this great word of the world if somebody did not as Nelly says “comfort” them. Took tea as [sic] Mrs Towne’s with Miss Irwin of Pa. Jamie brought down word that Mr. Emerson was in town on Saturday—full of jollity just as if no house had been burned down. “Only those things were burned which should have been burned” he said “such as rubbish and feather-beds!” This was the hour to test his teaching and it is encouraging for mortals to see how he is upheld by his high faith.
