[Manchester—Thursday, 1 August 1872]

Thursday August 1st Little Nelly & her mamma went home yesterday. Today the earth is clothed in perfect loveliness. It cooled out of a mist this morning into an unwonted glory. A letter came from Mrs Emerson which brought the tears to my eyes. We are very happy once more to be alone. The wear of little feet over the stair and the wear of children’s minds over ours, illustrate each other.
