[Boston—Wednesday, 14 May 1873]

Wednesday May 14. Last teachers’ meeting of the North End School for this year—visit from dear Longfellow who asked me what they were doing to our pretty street (they were tearing up the pavement) “opening a vein?”

Went to Portsmouth in the P.M. where Jamie spoke. We dined at Mr. De Normandie’s and came to know his lovely wife and their delightful home. It was midnight before we reached home.
