[Boston—Thursday, 15 May 1873]

Thursday 15. Made several visits—met Mrs Agassiz—went with her to Cambridge to hear her husband. What a treat it was! A clear statement of embryological knowledge, its systems and history forming an insuperable barrier in my own mind & the faith of Darwin—the name of the latter was not mentioned but Agassiz made his own statement in a clear untrammeled way hardly to be too much admired. Returned in season to dine—Mrs Baker, Miss Larcom and mother being our beloved guests. In the evening we went to hear George MacDonald—on Hamlet—the MacD’s went to Mr. Ellis’ to pass the night. His lecture was noble both in spirit & thought and his farewell was full of feeling. After the lecture friends crowded around them to say last words. It was a touching lovely scene.
