[Evanston—Wednesday, 13 October 1875]

Wed. Oct 13. Up early and off to Chicago. Robert Collyer came with us and set us on our way to Rockford. Walked through the town in the afternoon. It is not so pretty a place as I expected though it is lovely in the moonshine tonight. Crossed Mr. Lincoln’s Fox River today.

I think dear “J” is feeling a little more tired and home sick than usual today—but this place is the first home-sick kind of place we have seen.
