[Manchester—Friday, 24 September 1875]

Friday morning. J. left this morning for Hanover at half past 6. Drove yesterday to Beverly and made visits. Lucy Larcom came to dine and pass the night. She is assisting Mr. Whittier to make a collection of poems to be published by Osgood called “Three centuries of Song.”

Had an entirely wakeful night—thought I heard somebody in the house. Sat up pistol in hand nearly all night after 12.

Mr. & Mrs Batchelder called.
