[Manchester—Monday, 19 June 1876]

Monday June 19th Lizzy Bartol & Laura Marquand came yesterday afternoon to see us. We were sitting together reading Heine and dear “J” was free from pain all day and nearly all night. I trust he is to be well again. This morning my first walk—it was raining, but the air was full of fragrance. Mr. Bartol dropped in about his young actresses, the Bigelow sisters. Lenore charms him especially. They have made a engagement for the winter with Palmer of New York.
