[Boston—Wednesday, 11 April 1877]

April 11th Passed the day at Chardon St. How strangely certain experiences bring you nearer or distance you utterly from former relations. I feel near to dear Kate Gannett since mother’s death, as I never did before.

I feel as if I had had my last interview with Mrs William Hunt today. She said she should have been to leave a card because it was customary!! but failing that she came for a brief call—!!!

Dear Celia Thaxter passed yesterday here. Now and then I work upon Demeter and ponder it deeply.
