[Boston—Thursday, 1 April 1869]

April 1st Last night Kate Field gave her first lecture. She looked very pale and it was a great struggle & also a great success. As in the old days of Greece the beautiful Aspasia again exhorted the people. She pleaded her cause well and applause and approbation greeted her on every hand. Her discourse was brilliant, witty, but neither learned nor was it inexact. Where she touched at all, the point was ably and surely turned.
